Chelsea are based in west London, the section of town many see as a swish neighbourhood, and this certainly has contributed to Chelsea’s image as the glamour club of the south (the glamour club of England traditionally being Manchester United). The club was founded in 1905, and have spent most of their history in football’s top tier.

The early years were starved of success, and a trip to an occasion such as a Cup Final was rare; the nearest they came to triumph back then was reaching the FA Cup final in 1915, but The Pensioners lost to Sheffield United. Chelsea’s reputation as a glamour outfit was boosted by their signing big-name players and an attacking style which many admired. Unfortunately, the blues made little impact on the English game in the mid-20th Century, but greater times lay ahead. Chelsea’s achievements of the 1960s and early 1970s saw renewed interest and Chelsea tickets began to assume a more gilt-edged quality. As time has passed this tendency has grown, and nowadays Chelsea tickets can change hands for many times face value. Recently, they have won the league title two years running, under the guidance of manager Jose Mourinho. In all, Chelsea have won three league titles, four FA Cups, four League Cups, and two UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups.
Chelsea’s home is Stamford Bridge football stadium in Fulham, West London. The club has been based there since they were formed. The familiar royal blue shirts, shorts, and white socks are known to English football fans everywhere. Their club crest features a rampant blue lion, reflecting their resolve and fighting spirit. Chelsea are believed to have an estimated four million fans around the world.
In June 2003, then Chairman Ken Bates sold Chelsea to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich for £140 million. This was the largest-ever sale of an English football club. Abramovich released over £100 million to be spent on new players, and manager Claudio Ranieri was replaced by Portuguese coach José Mourinho. Mourinho had recently secured UEFA Champions League glory for FC Porto and Abramovich hoped he would perform the same feat for Chelsea. Tickets were flowing fast in anticipation, but unfortunately, this did not come to pass.
In 2005, Chelsea became Premiership champions after a record-breaking season of most clean sheets, fewest goals conceded, most victories, and most points earned. They were the League Cup winners, with a 3–2 victory over Liverpool at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium and they also reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. They were League Champions again the following year, amazingly equalling their Premiership record of the previous season. The following season, the giants of Manchester United returned to their familiar spot at the top of the English Premier League, and Chelsea had to accept second place. But Chelsea did beat United 1-0 in the FA Cup final, the first at the new Wembley Stadium, so they enjoyed a brief taste of revenge against their foe. In September 2007, José Mourinho left Chelsea after a prolonged dysfunctional situation involving his relationship with Abramovich, and many Chelsea fans were very sorry to se him go. He was replaced by Israeli Avram Grant, a friend of Abramovich. Many Chelsea fans see the relationship between Abramovich and Grant as further symptoms of all that is wrong with the English game, a situation which resulted in the adored Mourinho leaving their club, and a relative unknown taking the helm. One thing is for sure; Chelsea fans are among the world’s most loyal and vocal, and Chelsea tickets will never depreciate.
