After the hungry post-war years, Arsenal were only the second football team in the 20th century to win the fabled League and Cup Double in 1970–71. During the past twenty years they have been one of the most successful clubs in English football, winning two more Doubles, plus the Premier League in 2004. They became the only London club ever to reach the UEFA Champions League final in 2006, but were defeated by a superior Barcelona side.

Arsenal’s colours have remained red and white through their long history. As the style of the kit has changed, the club have also relocated over time. From their initial home in Woolwich, south-east London, Arsenal moved north across London to Arsenal Stadium, Highbury. More recently, in 2006, they moved to their brand new Emirates Stadium in Holloway. The Emirates is the envy of most other Premiership teams and its 60,000 capacity has enabled Arsenal fans greater access to Arsenal tickets, especially to larger games, such as the grudge games with Manchester United and Spurs, when tickets were once likely to be sold out. Arsenal’s club crest features a cannon, giving the team the nickname “The Gunners”. Arsenal fans often refer to themselves as “Gooners”, the name being derived from this nickname.

Arsenal are among the wealthiest clubs in English football, worth over £600m as of 2007, and their fan base is fairly diverse compared to most other English football teams. Arsenal fans are renowned for being Arsenal ticket hungry, and they certainly have thronged to the Emirates in large numbers since it was opened. Many believed Arsenal wouldn’t have the ability to fill their new stadium, as London teams don’t necessarily boast the highest attendances in the Premiership, but so far Arsenal tickets have been moving fast, and the stadium has seen some great atmospheres.
